Africa is a remarkably multilingual place. All across the continent, you’ll find thousands of indigenous languages spoken in their local communities, albeit overshadowed by the larger languages that act as lingua francas in their respective countries. West Africa in particular is a bastion of linguistic diversity, with hundreds of complex languages with little resemblance to one another spoken all throughout the region. One of those languages is Maninka (more precisely known as Eastern Maninka).
Maninka—not to be confused with Mandinka—is one of the biggest indigenous languages in Africa, clocking in at more than 4.6 million speakers across a number of West African nations. Maninka and its cousin languages are influential languages in the region, often serving as regional lingua francas learned by speakers of smaller languages. However, that doesn’t mean Maninka is well represented on the global stage. Limited translation services exist for the prominent African language, but we at TranslationServices.com are proud to be one of the companies serving Maninka with our new Maninka translation team.

Maninka: a lingua franca in West Africa
The biggest Maninka-speaking country is Guinea, where more than 3.1 million people in the Upper Guinea region speak the language. Next in line is neighboring Mali, where Maninka has been designated as one of 13 national languages. Smaller communities of speakers are spread across the region in countries like Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire. Maninka belongs to the Mande family of languages, which itself is classified within the larger macrofamily of Niger–Congo, although the distinctive nature of the Mande languages has led some linguists to question this classification.
In terms of grammar, Maninka is complex. Maninka’s basic word order is subject-object-verb, which is consistent across Mande languages but deviates from the typical subject-verb-object order of most Niger–Congo languages. The language also uses postpositions—that is, adpositions after the noun, as opposed to prepositions before the noun—and places modifiers such as adjectives and numerals after the noun. The language is often written in the Latin alphabet, but it can also be written in the N’Ko script, a native right-to-left writing system specifically designed for Maninka and its sister languages. Maninka is a difficult language to translate to and from, given its complexity, but when you work with a team of native-speaking translators, it’s suddenly not a challenge.
