Did you know that there are more than 77 established languages, including 68 indigenous languages, spoken in Pakistan? The language with the most native speakers in Pakistan is Punjabi, with 38% of the population speaking it as their first language, followed by Pashto, Sindhi, and Saraiki. Urdu is fifth, with 7% of the population, despite being designated as the country’s national language and lingua franca, used widely in education, media, and government. The seventh-biggest native language in Pakistan is Hindko, spoken by 2.44% of the population, and that’s the language we’re focusing on today.
With an estimated 5 to 7 million native speakers, Hindko stands as one of the biggest languages in Pakistan, although it remains a minority language. Rather than a single language, Hindko is better classified as a group of closely related Lahnda (or West Punjabi) dialects, but recent decades have seen a push toward categorizing Hindko as a single language, separate from Punjabi and the other Lahnda dialects. Efforts to promote and preserve Hindko literature and the language in general have been gaining increased traction, but the language still lacks the resources and translation services of Pakistan’s bigger languages, such as Punjabi or Urdu.
At TranslationServices.com, we recognize the value of Hindko and have proudly created our own Hindko translation team. To see a free quote for our Hindko translation services, simply reach out with a message.
What makes Hindko so unique?
Judging by the name, you might have assumed Hindko was spoken in India. Indeed, the name likely originated from Pashto and meant “the Indian language”—but it’s entirely spoken in Pakistan, specifically in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northwestern Punjab. It’s similar enough to Punjabi and Saraiki that it demonstrates at least partial mutual intelligibility with both, although it bears more similarities to Saraiki than Punjabi.
Hindko isn’t just related to Saraiki and Punjabi—it’s also related to India’s Hindi language, albeit more distantly, and is even very distantly related to English. Hindko’s basic word order is subject-object-verb, different from English’s subject-verb-object, and like many other Indo–European languages, it features two grammatical genders. Hindko’s several cases dictate the grammatical relationships of the words in a sentence, with adjectives also declining for gender, number, and case when appropriate. Verbs also undergo considerable inflection, accepting markers to denote the number and gender of the subject as well as the aspect and mood of the verb. Hindko doesn’t conjugate verbs for tense, however.
