Considering that some 99% of Bangladeshis speak Bengali as their native language, it may surprise you to learn that the country is nonetheless home to a whopping 36 indigenous languages. But even “Bengali” is not necessarily just one single language. Indeed, Bengali is sometimes classified as a “dialect continuum,” which refers to a series of dialects that change across geographical space, highly similar to those physically close to them but less mutually intelligible with more geographically distant varieties. This is where we find Noakhailla.
Noakhailla, also known as Noakhali Bengali or Noakhalian, is a minority language of Bangladesh that’s often considered a Bengali dialect, similarly to Chittagonian or Sylheti. Even though the language boasts more than 7 million native speakers, unfortunately, the classification as a Bengali dialect results in the language being overlooked, including by its own speakers, who increasingly opt to teach their children Standard Bengali rather than Noakhailla. More and more, younger generations are unable to speak the language, which often faces stigmatization within Bangladeshi society. But we at TranslationServices.com don’t think that’s fair. That’s why we’re proud to introduce our new Noakhailla translation team dedicated to this precious minority language in Bangladesh.

What is Noakhailla, and how does it differ from Standard Bengali?
Noakhailla is the native vernacular of Noakhali, historically known as Bhulua, which is situated in southeastern Bangladesh’s Chittagong Division. It’s also natively spoken in neighboring India’s state of Tripura. However, the Noakhali diaspora is large, so you’ll also find speakers in the Middle East, the United States, Italy, and other European countries. Naokhailla is mutually intelligible with Sandwipi, a Bengali dialect spoken in Sandwip, but it’s mutually unintelligible with farther dialects, such as Dinajpur. Noakhailla was historically written in the Sylheti Nagri script, but today, it’s usually written in the Bengali script.
Naokhailla belongs to the Indo–European language family, making it related not only to Bengali and Hindi but also English. It can differ significantly from Standard Bengali in not only pronunciation and vocabulary but also grammar, depending on the dialect, as Noakhailla features several dialects, including the varieties of Grierson, Chhagalnaiya, Feni, Hatiya Island, and Ramganj. The language distinguishes between polite and informal pronouns in the second and third persons, with a gender distinction in all animate third-person pronouns—polite or informal, singular or plural. Noakhailla can be a tricky language to translate, which is why you should work with passionate native-speaking translators like our team members.
