Brazil is a notable linguistic exception in South America, constituting the only major country on the continent that doesn’t speak Spanish (for the record, neither do Guyana, Suriname, or French Guiana). Brazil famously speaks Portuguese, but that’s not its only linguistic difference from its neighbors. In addition to dozens of indigenous languages exclusive to Brazil, the country also boasts a unique minority language closely related to Italian. Talian is part Italian, part Portuguese, and fully Brazilian.
Talian has an estimated 500,000 native speakers today, the descendants of Italians who immigrated to the South American country between 1875 and 1914. The estimated number of Italian descendants in the same general region of Brazil is much higher, indicating that most don’t speak Talian. The language was heavily oppressed in the 1930s and 1940s, with the resulting stigma attached to speaking Talian remaining even today, but at the same time, local governments are making efforts to preserve Talian. There are also newspapers and radio programs in the language, although translation services are scarce because most companies are reluctant to work with minority languages like Talian. But not us here at TranslationServices.com: we’re proud to introduce our new Talian translation services.

Talian: Brazil’s special version of Italian
Talian may also be called Brazilian Venetian—that’s right, it’s not actually derived from Italian but rather Venetian, a minority Romance language in Italy’s Veneto region. Spoken in southern Brazil, primarily in Rio Grande do Sul but also Santa Catarina and Espírito Santo, Talian can mostly trace its origins back to Venetian but with heavy influences from other minority languages in the Veneto and Lombardy regions of Italy as well as, of course, Brazilian Portuguese.
Talian sounds archaic to modern-day Venetian speakers in Italy, a phenomenon that’s common among immigrant languages. The language has incorporated a great number of Portuguese words, particularly for objects and concepts that didn’t exist in 19th-century Italy, such as terms related to modern technology or plants and animals unique to Brazil. All the Portuguese influence makes Talian quite distinct from modern-day Venetian in Italy, but the two nonetheless remain mutually intelligible. Since Portuguese is itself a Romance language closely related to Venetian, the words that Talian borrows from Portuguese are often still quite close to Venetian anyway. However, an Italian, Portuguese, or Venetian translator can’t do a Talian translation job justice, so you should always work with native Talian speakers.
