Our Latest Offering Is Momogun Translation Services

It goes without saying that the dominant language of Malaysia is Malay—but it’s certainly not the native language of everyone in the Southeast Asian country. Malaysia is highly linguistically diverse, housing some 130+ languages within its borders, and although Malaysia’s minority populations tend to learn Malay to communicate with people from other parts of the country, they still have their own languages that they use at home and in the local community. Often, these languages are endangered. Such is the case with Momogun.

Momogun has around 90,000 speakers, but rather than a single language, it’s more accurately described as a cluster of three closely related varieties, with none emerging as the primary variety. Specifically, Momogun is broken down into Kimaragang (or Marigang), Tobilung, and Rungus. Other closely related languages in the region could also be related to the Momogun cluster, but not enough linguistic data exists at present to make that declaration. In some regions, Momogun children are not learning the language, with parents opting to teach them only Standard Malay instead, which makes the long-term outlook on Momogun’s vitality bleak. We at TranslationServices.com are proud to work with the different varieties of Momogun in our new Momogun translation services.

Momogun: three languages in one

Momogun is native to Malaysia’s easternmost province, Sabah, especially in the Kudat Division, located at the northernmost tip of Borneo. The Rungus people, numbering around 74,000, constitute the biggest ethnolinguistic group among Momogun speakers, making Rungus the largest variety. Traditionally, Rungus was written in native hieroglyphs called Surip, although today, the Momogun languages are written in the Latin alphabet, like most other languages in Malaysia. Together, the Momogun languages come from the Austronesian family, like Malay, but the relation is only distant.

While Malay uses a default word order of subject-verb-object, Momogun prefers the verb-initial order of verb-subject-object. Nouns are made plural via a plural prefix that changes depending on the initial letters of the stem. As is common in Austronesian languages, Momogun also uses reduplication—reduplicating an adjective makes it weaker, whereas reduplicating a verb imbues it with a sense of aimlessness. Momogun also has a complex pronoun system that includes not only singular and plural but also dual, as well as two separate third-person pronouns that distinguish distance. Certainly, translating to and from Momogun brings a lot of challenges—but they’re nothing our native Momogun-speaking translators can’t handle.
