As of Now, We Offer Western Tlacolula Valley Zapotec Translation Services

All across Mexico, there are hundreds of languages spoken—it’s not just Spanish. Indeed, the majority of the Mexican population speaks Spanish, most as a native language, but an important minority speaks it as a second language, and an even smaller minority doesn’t speak it at all. That’s because the country is filled with indigenous languages still spoken today, some by quite large communities, despite the consistent threat posed by the ubiquity and prestige of Spanish. Among those languages, we find Western Tlacolula Valley Zapotec.

Western Tlacolula Valley Zapotec, which also goes by the much shorter names of Valley Zapotec or, natively, Dizhsa, is a cluster of closely related Zapotec languages that demonstrate varying degrees of mutual intelligibility. Zapotec itself, despite often being treated as a single language, is also a group of related languages, many of which are highly distinct from one another. All varieties of Valley Zapotec, which collectively claim around 28,000 speakers, are endangered, some boasting more speakers than others. But no variety of Valley Zapotec is well represented by international translation companies, so we at TranslationServices.com are here to provide dedicated Valley Zapotec translation services.

What is Western Tlacolula Valley Zapotec and how does it differ from other Zapotec languages?

Like most other varieties of Zapotec, Valley Zapotec is spoken in the southern state of Oaxaca, which accounts for more than half of all indigenous language speakers in the entirety of Mexico. Western Tlacolula Valley Zapotec is, unsurprisingly, found specifically in the western region of the Tlacolula Valley, located in the center of the state. The various languages within the cluster include the following:

  • Santa Ana del Valle Zapotec

  • Teotitlán del Valle Zapotec

  • San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec

  • Tlacolula de Matamoros Zapotec

  • San Juan Guelavía Zapotec

  • San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya Zapotec

  • San Juan Teitipac Zapotec

The Valley Zapotec languages are incredibly complex, with a default verb-subject-object word order. That means the verb comes first in a sentence, but other words may sometimes be placed before the verb for emphasis. Valley Zapotec languages also draw a strong distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs, which often come in pairs. In some cases, this results in a causative formation, as in the intransitive verb for “to enter” pairing with a transitive verb meaning “to cause to enter.” It goes without saying that Valley Zapotec languages present translation challenges, but that’s why it’s wise to work with experienced native-speaking translators like ours.
