English to Malayalam Translation Services
(We also offer Malayalam to English translation services.)
India boasts one of the largest populations in the world, so it’s not surprising that it’s also one of the most linguistically diverse countries on the planet. Those unfamiliar with India may believe that most Indians speak Hindi, but in fact, only around 57% of Indians do. Most other Indians speak one of the 450+ other indigenous languages spoken around the country. In Kerala, the dominant language is Malayalam, one of India’s 22 scheduled languages with a long and prestigious history.

What is Malayalam like as a language?
Malayalam is spoken mostly in Kerala, a coastal state in southwestern India, where it’s the primary language of daily life. Malayalam has around 35 million native speakers, with an additional 700,000 or so people speaking it as a second language. Malayalam is from the Dravidian language family, making it entirely separate from Hindi, and it’s written in its own writing system, called the Malayalam script. The Malayalam script creates syllable blocks by combining consonant and vowel characters, with 578 combinations possible.
Malayalam also features complicated grammar, with nouns that decline for seven cases as well as number. The pronoun system in Malayalam is also far more complicated than that of English, featuring several distinctions that English doesn’t make. For example, Malayalam has two versions of “we”—one includes the listener, and the other excludes them. In the second-person pronouns (both singular and plural), Malayalam differentiates between three levels of formality. Finally, in the third-person pronouns, Malayalam distinguishes between proximal (near the speaker) and distal (distant from the speaker). These nuances can be difficult to capture accurately when translating from English to Malayalam, but our translators are seasoned professionals with years of experience.
